The 57th Annual Buffalo Round is happening the last Friday in September at Custer State Park. Join the town of Custer, State Park guides, spectators from around the world, and the Claw, Antler and Hide company September 30th, 2021 for the great Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup.

This is a must-see event and is a one-of-a-kind experience unique to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Every year the State Park buffalo herd located near the town of Custer, SD is rounded up to vaccinate cows, brand calves and inspect the health of the herd.

Be sure to to determine which viewing area you will be going to prior to arriving at the park on Friday morning.

Gates Open at 6:15 a.m.

Round Up Begins at 9:30 a.m.

Branding and Sorting Begins at 1:00 p.m.

- Reservations are NOT required.

- There is NO admission fee for the event

- A park entrance license is NOT required the day of the Buffalo Roundup.

- The Roundup is generally over by 11:30 a.m., but visitors need to be prepared to stay in the viewing areas until the bison are safely in the corrals.

- It is encouraged to leave pets at home. They will need to remain in a vehicle if you bring them.

Viewing Locations

North Parking and Viewing: Head south from the State Game Lodge area on Wildlife Loop Road.

South Parking and Viewing: Head east on Wildlife Loop Road near Blue Bell campground.

This annual bison roundup corrals almost 1,400 buffalo, not including the bull bison.

Suitable for all ages, visitor numbers for the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup range from 13,000 to 20,000. Once in the park, viewers are divided into two parties, one on each side of the beautiful state park valley.

The roundup and subsequent October sale ensure the herd size is manageable for the condition of the park grasslands and the longevity of the herd. Some bison will be auctioned off for their meat, hides, and furs, while some are sold to individual ranchers and collectors.

After the roundup make sure to come into town and stop by the Claw, Antler and Hide store. We are located at 735 Mount Rushmore Road in Custer, SD just a few miles from the Roundup.
